Zu diesem Thema fand eine Gedenkveranstaltung für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus statt. An der Gedenkveranstaltung beteiligten sich auch Mannheimer Schülerinnen und Schüler. Nach dem Vorbild des Projekts „Namen statt Nummern“ der Gedenkstätte Dachau verfassten sie Biografien von Häftlingen aus Mannheim.
Bürgermeisterin Dr. Ulrike Freundlieb nannte erschreckende Zahlen: Von 1933 bis 1945 waren in Dachau 200.000 Menschen inhaftiert. 569 der Häftlinge stammten aus Mannheim. 43.000 Menschen, darunter mindestens 72 aus Mannheim, sind noch während der Haft verstorben. Die Häftlinge hatten keinen Namen. „Das KZ legt das Wesentliche des Macht- und Organisationsapparats des Nationalsozialismus frei“, so Freundlieb, „das KZ war ein Ort der Dehumanisierung, ein Ort der Macht. Menschen wurden ausgesondert, kategorisiert und mit Nummern versehen.“ Das verbinde Auschwitz und Dachau. Besorgt über die jüngsten rechtsextremistischen Gewalttaten in Deutschland appellierte sie: „Wir müssen verhindern, dass Menschen wieder zu Nummern werden.“
Die Schriftstellerin Beate Schäfer schilderte in ihrem Vortrag „… vielleicht kann man uns ja doch noch brauchen …“ die Geschichte ihres in Mannheim geborenen Großvaters Walter Samstag. Er wurde der Zuhälterei bezichtigt, freigesprochen, dennoch in Schutzhaft genommen und nach Dachau gebracht, wo er als „Asozialer“ gefangen gehalten wurde. 1942 erhielt seine Familie die Mitteilung, er sei in Dachau verstorben. Tatsächlich wurde Walter Samstag nach Linz gebracht und dort vergast.
Schüler der Friedrich-List-Schule widmeten sich der Lebensgeschichte des Sozialdemokraten Hans Heilig und den Biografien von Joseph Bleh und Hermann Bullinger, die ihre Jugend in Erziehungsheimen verbracht hatten und in die Kleinkriminalität gerutscht waren. An Samuel Billigheimer, Erich Baer und den SPD-Politiker Fritz Cahn-Garnier – sie alle waren jüdischen Glaubens – erinnerten Schüler des Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasiums. Schüler des Ludwig-Frank-Gymnasiums befassten sich mit den Biografien der in Warschau geborenen polnischen Zwangsarbeiter Wladislaw Kostrzenski, Marian Krainski und Lech Brydak. Sie wurden nach Dachau und anschließend in das KZ Sandhofen verschleppt. Die Geschichte des katholischen Geistlichen Franz Weinmann, des Zeugen Jehovas Karl Brod und Adolf Davids, der dem jüdischen Glauben angehörte, erzählten Schüler des Ursulinen-Gymnasiums. Jüdischen Glaubens war auch Benno Furchheimer, seine Biografie verfassten Schüler der Wilhelm-Wundt-Realschule. Mitwirkende aus dem Jugendzentrum in Selbstverwaltung „Friedrich Dürr“ zeichneten das Schicksal des Gewerkschafters und KPD-Mitglieds nach.
Am 27. Januar 1945 wurde das Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager Auschwitz befreit. 1996 hat der damalige Bundespräsident Roman Herzog den 27. Januar zum Gedenktag für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus erklärt. Die UNO proklamierte den Tag zum Weltgedenktag für die Opfer der Shoa.
